City of Craft Toronto Installation Programming
Call for Proposals
Deadline: August 31, 2009
City of Craft is looking for crafty artists and artsy crafters to create installations for this year’s City of Craft 2009, which will take place both in and around The Theatre Centre during the weekend of December 12-13, 2009. This year’s installation programming will be greatly expanded to include more installation artists and even more fantastic Queen Street West venues. For this year’s installations we hope to include a wide range of crafty approaches, which reflect the diversity and conceptual richness of contemporary craft practices. Several venues will be available to artists for City of Craft installation programming this year, from Queen West galleries, storefront windows and public spaces to the nooks and crannies of City of Craft’s fabulous and historic venue, The Theatre Centre. Some ideas for proposals could include (but are certainly not limited to!) the exploration of:
- crafty public interventions
- ‘digital craft’ (craft + video, craft + kinetics, etc)
- crafty performance
- textile-based installations
- participatory craft-based installations

Poplar is currently accepting proposals for exhibitions of original work. Craftspeople, artists, curators and studio collectives are encouraged to submit proposals. Two spaces are available for alternating six-week exhibitions. Submissions of critical writing and reviews will be considered for ArtClothText, a forum for textile, fibre and mixed media artists.

Marie-Michele B. Lemaire, Etude discrete sur mursOn the main floor of the MMAQ is Centre MATERIA, an artist-run centre dedicated to hand-crafted art objects. (Yes, that’s right an artist-run centre dedicated to the dissemination of craft!) My visit co-incided with the exhibition Splaf, klong et frou frou featuring the work of recent graduates of the Maison des métiers d’art de Québec. Ranging from kinetic, mixed media sculpture to delicate miniature jacquard weavings the show demonstrates the diversity of production at MMAQ.

Un Jin Cho, UndecipherableThe EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts is announcing a call for submissions of visual art from Calgary (and surrounding area) artists and art collectives for the following spaces:
The LEDGE: This unique space is located in the +15 and overlooks Centre Court from the second floor of the Centre. It is currently under renovations (to be completed for Oct. 1, 2008), when completed the space will have a cement floor and a white wall.
The LEDGE is most conducive to sculpture and installation. Exhibitions in this location will run for three month intervals. An artist fee is paid for this location
Window Galleries: These seven window spaces are located across from the Max Bell Theatre. Four of the windows are conducive to sculptural/installation work, three of the windows are more suited to 2D artwork. Each window is painted theatre black, they all have different measurements, with some equipped with lighting and power sources. Exhibitions will run in 4 – 12 week intervals depending on the needs of the Calgary art community. Artist groups and collectives are strongly encouraged to apply for these spaces. No artist fees are paid for the 7 Window Galleries at this time.
Please note that both the LEDGE and the Window Galleries are located in high traffic areas, members of the public from all ages and backgrounds will be viewing the artwork.
All Submission must include the following information to be considered:
1. Application form.
2. Proposal (maximum of 2 pages): Clearly outline your proposed exhibition or project. Include any special installation requirements. PLEASE INDICATE WHICH SPACE YOU ARE APPLYING FOR.
3. Artist Statement: (maximum of 1 page).
4. Curriculum Vitae: (maximum of 3 pages).
5. Image list (included on the application form).
6. Support Material: A CD with no more than 15 JPEG images (300 dpi and sized to 800 pixels maximum) and/or a DVD for video (no longer than 5 minutes in length). All images must be numbered and labeled to match the corresponding image list.
7. Self-addressed stamped envelope: submissions will not be returned without the SASE. Postage must be valid for mailing from within Canada .
Please ensure that your name and title of the proposed project is clearly marked on each part of the submission, including all support material. DO NOT SEND ORIGINALS, PROPOSALS WITH STAPLES OR FOLDERS. Note that the EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts is not responsible for the loss or damage, however caused, of materials submitted in support of an application.
PLEASE NOTE: Slides, website address, printed images and VHS tapes will not be reviewed.
