Fibre Fortnight at ACAD next week

As you may know I am an instructor in the Fibre Program at the Alberta College of Art & Design. Each year we host a two week exhibition of student work along with various events celebrating what we do every day in one of the most dynamic and exciting Fibre Programs anywhere. This year, Fibre Fortnight will be held from March 5 to 16 in the main mall at ACAD. All events associated with Fibre Fortnight are free and open to the public.

Alongside our annual Miniature Show and Silent Auction that supports our visiting artist program, grad class and student-initiated projects (Yes, we are still accepting submissions until the end of the week!), we are hosting a few new and notable events this year that I wanted to share with you.

From March 6 to 8  from 11 am to 2 pm daily we will be Yarn Bombing the Candahar. The Candahar is an installation by Theo Sims that recreates

…a Belfast public house, named for a South Belfast Street. The installation is complete when staffed in collaboration with two Belfast bartenders Chris and Conor Roddy, who act as unscripted performers. The project fuses the authentic with fantasy, spectacle with stage, and at its heart acts as a catalyst for conversation, debate and dialogue – and a pint here and there.

With the permission of Sims and the IKG we will be wrapping the exterior of The Candahar with knitting and crochet. On March 8 from 530 to 730 pm, join us inside The Candahar for a discussion about yarn on International Women’s Day.

If you have been curious to see our new Jacquard loom in action you will definitely want to pop by room 417 on March 12 for a series of Jacquard weaving demonstrations running from 1 to 6 pm.

Ruth Scheuing at the loom

Finally I am very excited to share the news that Vancouver artist Ruth Scheuing will be visiting ACAD March 15 and 16. She will be giving a public artist talk the evening of March 15 from 630 to 8 pm in the ACAD Boardroom. Scheuing’s talk will coincide with the closing of the two week Fibre Fortnight Exhibition and the Miniature Show and SIlent Auction (Bidding closes after the artist talk at 815 pm).

Shelley Ouellet

Part of a continuing series of exhibitions that showcase the diversity of work being produced by ACAD’s creative community, this exhibition gives students a glimpse of the issues their instructors are currently exploring in their own practices. A broad cross-section of activity is represented, from illustration, sculpture, graphic design, advertizing, photography, ceramics, fibre, glass, print media, media art, digital technology, to painting and drawing.

This year’s exhibition will also include curated selections of ACAD alumni work to mark the 25th anniversary of ACAD’s secession and celebrate its autonomy as an institution.
