Fibre Fortnight at ACAD next week

As you may know I am an instructor in the Fibre Program at the Alberta College of Art & Design. Each year we host a two week exhibition of student work along with various events celebrating what we do every day in one of the most dynamic and exciting Fibre Programs anywhere. This year, Fibre Fortnight will be held from March 5 to 16 in the main mall at ACAD. All events associated with Fibre Fortnight are free and open to the public.

Alongside our annual Miniature Show and Silent Auction that supports our visiting artist program, grad class and student-initiated projects (Yes, we are still accepting submissions until the end of the week!), we are hosting a few new and notable events this year that I wanted to share with you.

From March 6 to 8  from 11 am to 2 pm daily we will be Yarn Bombing the Candahar. The Candahar is an installation by Theo Sims that recreates

…a Belfast public house, named for a South Belfast Street. The installation is complete when staffed in collaboration with two Belfast bartenders Chris and Conor Roddy, who act as unscripted performers. The project fuses the authentic with fantasy, spectacle with stage, and at its heart acts as a catalyst for conversation, debate and dialogue – and a pint here and there.

With the permission of Sims and the IKG we will be wrapping the exterior of The Candahar with knitting and crochet. On March 8 from 530 to 730 pm, join us inside The Candahar for a discussion about yarn on International Women’s Day.

If you have been curious to see our new Jacquard loom in action you will definitely want to pop by room 417 on March 12 for a series of Jacquard weaving demonstrations running from 1 to 6 pm.

Ruth Scheuing at the loom

Finally I am very excited to share the news that Vancouver artist Ruth Scheuing will be visiting ACAD March 15 and 16. She will be giving a public artist talk the evening of March 15 from 630 to 8 pm in the ACAD Boardroom. Scheuing’s talk will coincide with the closing of the two week Fibre Fortnight Exhibition and the Miniature Show and SIlent Auction (Bidding closes after the artist talk at 815 pm).

Papergirl Calgary Call for Volunteers

The Papergirl Calgary Project currently requires additional team leaders to implement the very first edition of the project right here in Calgary for  August 2012.
* Are you passionate about art?
* Do you believe art should be an inclusive not exclusive venture?
* Are you a fan of gettin’ on yer bike and cycling the city?
* Would you like to take art out of the galleries and institutions and into the streets?
Then join the Papergirl Calgary Team and discover the “Art of Giving Art”!
Papergirl is an art project from Berlin. It has now grown into an international worldwide art distribution phenomenon.

Art should be accessible to everyone. That is the spirit behind Papergirl: a pedal-powered, volunteer based, community oriented art project. Papergirl redefines “street-art” and questions where the value and meaning lies in art: within the object itself, within its symbolic narrative, its economic prowess, its historical context and so on, and so forth.
What happens in a Papergirl project?
  • A call for 2D artworks is made to the local Calgary community where the project is based.
  • The artworks are collected and subsequently, every single submitted work is exhibited.
  • The works are then rolled up, and delivered by Papergirls to the unsuspecting public a.k.a. the local community.
The Results of Papergirl?
Artists gain the opportunity to exhibit their work in a local gallery, AND have their work also given to a new collector. Papergirls get some great exercise and smiles due to their hard delivery work. Volunteers get the chance to work with fellow artists, and get involved in their local community. Hundreds of Calgarians receive a work of art, and become art collectors.

Workshop “Random Precision
Tuesday, September 13, 9-4 pm at ACAD

Using a personal collection of materials with strong linear qualities, participants will develop an individual vocabulary of three-dimensional line. This provides the essential components of this challenging workshop to be used in an exploration of stitch, dept, translucency, illusion and structure.

This is a rare opportunity for individuals outside the ACAD degree program to work with an artist of this stature. Fibre artists, sculptors, mixed media artists and those interested in jumpstarting the creative process would enjoy working with Michael Brennand-Wood in this one day workshop.

‘Random Precision’ is open to the public through ACAD Extended Studies (contact 403.284.7640) The cost of the workshop is $159.00 plus GST.

For more information on Michael Brennand-Wood and his work, visit his website or read this interview on Ideas in the Making.

Mobile Street Archive: Walk. Draw. Repeat.

This past Saturday, I participated in my partner Kristofer Kelly’s Mobile Street Archive project for Truck Gallery. For several hours I walked one-hundred, steps, drew for ten minutes, then repeated per the artist’s instruction. We headed north on Centre Street beginning at the Calgary Tower.

The pace surprised me as it seemed to take a long time to move even a few blocks. I think perhaps this became my favorite aspect of the project as the day progressed. Bound as I was by the logic of Walk. Draw. Repeat. I began to really pay some attention to a line I travel almost every day on my way from home to downtown. The challenge of drawing whatever happened to be one-hundred steps from my last subject compelled me on and I walked with the group for several hours. Kristofer continued the project until midnight.

Nearly two-hundred drawings were produced, spanning fifteen hours and almost forty city blocks.

Mobile Street Archive is part of an ongoing project. Check for news about this and other projects on Kristofer Kelly’s website.
