This weekend, “Q the Arts” took over the Arrata Opera Centre and provided an evening of performance art, music, spoken word and visual arts for Calgary’s queer community. A co-production of Swallow a Bicycle Theatre and Fairytales Presentation Society, Q the Arts was an engaging, interactive experience celebrating the diverse talents of Calgary’s LGBTTQ community and their friends.
The sold-out event featured memorable performances by transdisciplinary artist Jamie Tea, spoken word poet Laurie MacFayden and Light Fires. The visual art displayed beneath the balcony was a compelling mix of photography, painting and mixed media from Calgary artists Travis McEwen and Breanna Strong and Edmonton-based artist Emanuel Ilagan.
All of the artists involved and the curators/organizers deserve kudos for putting on a “decidedly queer evening of art & culture” that will surely become a highly anticipated annual event.
